Artist's Statement
I am pulled and electrified by the idea of leaping, the kind of leaping that happens in the creative process when our relationship with ink, word, and form brings us to something unknown, and not yet dreamt. The motion of this figure is stilled by its central seed, red like the magnolia that inspired it. It is mid-leap, mid-risk, and mid-reveal. The words - stamped and hand-written - are my expressions for the artist in me, relentlessly and obsessively revisiting the same ideas, again and again bowing to the mysterious muses that bring me to a more direct and embodied form of the truth I seek. This figure is in process, as am I, in transition – defining what is human, and not human - and the boot marks a moment when experience coalesces. The vulnerable and flexible foot needs character, protection, and spectacle to walk in this paradoxical world.
