Artist's Statement
The two paintings submitted for this show, “Milo (she/her) and Lotus (he/him) are part of a series that includes nine portraits of transgender people. In 2018 a memo circulated within the federal government that aimed to strip transgender people of some of their civil rights. As the mother of a transgender child I was inspired to paint these portraits in reaction to that memo and out of a desire to support and share my love of the trans people in my life and in my community. My hope is that the viewer will see and experience some of what it means to be transgender and open their hearts and minds toward greater acceptance and support. The show that premiered these works “Larger than Life” included individual audio clips of each individual's trans journey. These can be accessed at ninakatz.com
