Artist's Statement
The distance between two moments, two states-of-being, can be conceived as both finite and infinite. They are never as far apart as we think. "The Room’s” representation of confinement reflects on both being trapped and the possibility of escape. From the womb forward/wherever we are, we are always yearning towards further freedom. The painting’s parallel patterns—the bars of the crib, the stripes on the wall—suggest an endless succession of escapes.
The subject of the painting has fled, the harsh light shines on empty air. The open window allows for the relief of the breeze. The painting considers the spaces we leave, when all is quiet and the circus is over. How much is changed in the wake of each escape?
