Artist's Statement
There is a chaotic absurdity to the tumultuous sprawl of “The Weight.” Set on a domestic stage, in every tableau is evidence of the suspended tension of daily life. The majority of the painting is in perpetual motion. Structures are failing personally, politically, and physically. Systems of understanding seem increasingly without meaning; the tropes of our childhood suddenly hold foreboding. The individual figures are distorted as much by the perspective of the space as by their concealed features. The bold colors draw humor into the scenes of bad luck, illusions and ever-shifting foundations. The painting evokes the maddening experience of sense-making at a circus.
