Artist's Statement
“All Gussied Up” is inspired by the couturier Dapper Dan, the original innovator of street fashion. His evolution from hustler to fashion icon is a legendary story. The hallmarks of his style are well-known- luxury print-covered custom looks created for hip-hop stars. Using bootlegged fabrics, luxe logos, and patterns often screen-printed on leather, Dapper Dan has been “knocking-up” fashion by subverting trends since 1982 when he opened his first boutique in Harlem. As a whole, my body of work focuses on street fashion and I owe it to Dapper Dan for shaking up the fashion industry by transforming high fashion into something more innovative and accessible. Streetwear outfits are impermanent works of art in themselves that continuously inspire me to come back to the studio day after day. I'm ultimately fascinated with street fashion because of how it yields limitless combinations of colors, texts, and patterns.
