Artist's Statement
This artwork has been in progress these past several years, which have been for me a time of constant underlying anxiety in the face of corrupt, cruel, and inept leadership. It's hard not to be always on edge, preparing for the next outrage and worried about its potential effects on the course of our history.
The angles and convolutions of the two overlapping figures on the left suggest their disquiet. The figures to the right are the externalization of these tortured thoughts, as well as the human flotsam and jetsam of the disruptions constantly provoked by the current administration. Human beings disregarded, recklessly thrown away, and killed.
The effects of this disruption are seen in the countering of effective responses to climate change and the movement to ensure and protect equal rights and opportunities, in the out-of-control pandemic, and in the use of law enforcement to cage children and attack peaceful demonstrators.
It is an existential battle. The hand reaching up is a call for help and a call for action to stop
