I originally designed this quilt as separate 12 x 12 blocks for an art workshop that I participated in. They were later joined as one to bring focus on major social justice issues facing America today. The statement “For Real” begs to ask if what’s really going on is really for real. When you look at it in its totality – it seems unbelievable. Deeply sadden and overwhelmed by the senseless murders of innocent people, who were doing normal and ordinary things, made me realize how “individual rights” were overruling our right to simply enjoy life. I also wondered if society understands that the consequence of (non)emergency calls on African American people could literally result in “death”. I also wanted to share the real meaning behind the “peaceful protest” of taking a knee. And, yes fake news and lies are delivered everyday by the President. FOR REAL: 20,000 lies and counting.
