Artist's Statement
I drew inspiration for this piece from my desire to convey movement of organic forms found in nature and my fascination with Chihuly’s glass sculptures. This work is the outcome of my experimentation with a non-traditional clay body, porcelain paper clay.
Through this magical medium, I can work the clay during its bone-dry stage which is not possible with other types of clay. Not only did I want to embrace the properties of this material, but I was also intrigued to push its boundaries to the breaking point, literally. The result is a sculpture that is lightweight, delicate, and organically expressive.
This piece was completed during this year’s Covid-19 pandemic. Working with clay offered me moments of tranquility and positive energy during these devastating times. It taught me a great deal of patience, perseverance, and confidence to achieve our visions regardless of the circumstances.
