Artist's Statement
This work depicts a Parisian man, crossing a crowded boulevard (cropped) in traffic, arm in sling. The subject was photographed candidly and “Alex” is a pseudonym. The model’s identity is unknown.
The use of alcohol marker on synthetic paper produces a watercolor effect, while rendering and eliminating layers with brush, cotton, silicon and fingers can achieve a unique tonal depth and texture, especially in the flesh tones. The near-life size scale invites the viewer to inspect the composition and connect with the subject on mutual terms.
“Alex” is the first in a portrait series intent to memorialize fearless people and tweak the appearance of durability, in figure, fashion and emotion. “I seek these people constantly and I come across them frequently, and more and more often these days, thankfully”.
The custom frame is cast stone and charcoal pigment, produced and assembled by the artist.
