Artist's Statement
On March 17, 2020 a shelter in place order was mandated, due to the coronavirus, in the San Francisco Bay Area. One week after the mandate, I needed to go to the grocery store to stock up on some essential items.
I entered the store with mask, gloves and an organized list. I literally felt like I was in a dystopian film. It was surreal, and the stress was palpable. When I got home, I needed to create. I didn’t have a canvas to paint, but I had some beautiful paper. I began drawing and posting these automatic drawings on Instagram, entitled “The Crown Series”, named after the “corona” virus.
This automatic drawing series has been highly therapeutic and given me some relief and joy during this stressful time, which ultimately inspired this 6ft by 6ft work, of 45 drawings, that has become part of The de Young Open Exhibition.
