Artist's Statement
As a member of the Women’s Caucus for Art, I participate in an activity called ArtTag. We choose a theme, draw numbers, and every six weeks we create a piece of art based on the theme and send it to the artist with the next highest number, while receiving a piece of art from the artist whose number precedes ours. We do this three times. This is my second piece of the “storm” theme. I received a painting (from my partner) with an expanse of darkened sky, streaks of lightning, trees, and a river below which gave me a feeling of insignificance and awe in the face of nature’s power and beauty.
In response, with my painting, the “storm” that had the greatest impact in magnifying my feeling of smallness in its presence, was the pervasive menace of the coronavirus. This tiny virus loomed large as my world visibly shrank.
