Artist's Statement
SECOND GLOVES reconfigures a pre-embroidered barong tagalog ceremonial shirt as a pair of light, airy, and ineffectual boxing gloves. SECOND GLOVES is a metaphor for the Filipinx-American fight for post-colonial visibility and agency, and the West Coast struggle against orchestrated violence/oppression, while contending with tropes of Filipinx nationalism and masculinity.
