Artist's Statement
In my paintings, I explore the different representations of women in our society, the connection between gender as socially constructed, and the interior of the body. Through my pictorial narratives, I intermingle different objects as well as social references to analyze and re-define the relationship between biological functions and gender-identity, where social and political power sit.
In the case of this painting (oil, transfer/ canvas) titled Air, my exploration centers on detaching biology from our socially constructed gender. I use transfers, which I divide and cut as a way to question the relationship between the inside and the socially-constructed outside of the body. The viewer is able to see these cuts and incisions throughout the painting layers. The woman in this painting is looking directly at the eyes of the viewer, taking control of her surroundings and becoming a subject, questioning the objectivization of her own representation.
