Artist's Statement
“Collapse” was inspired by recent books on the subject of global warming and climate change including “Collapse” and “Upheaval” by Jared Diamond, and “On Fire” and “This Changes Everything” by Naomi Klein. My environmental interests started in the early 1970’s with the reading of “Silent Spring” by Rachel Carson and “A Sand County Almanac” by Aldo Leopold, for my academic studies in landscape architecture. In my painting, the fruit represent the lush resources man has harvested from the earth to support his existence. The Rojo Alicante marble tabletop is a fast dwindling, nonrenewable resource. Reflections in the silver bowl are projections of future rotting harvests. The watch has no hands, indicating we have run out of time. Our existence, as we know it, is on the edge of collapse.
