Artist's Statement
Artist Deb Leal unfurls a psychological journey of love lost & idolatry in her 2019 music video, “Sugar” by James Wavey featuring Keri Shewmaker. The song poses as a confession of obsessive infatuation, while viewers witness rituals performed as an attempt to breathe life back into the ghost of a past relationship.
Regularly addressing patterns of human ritual, Leal transforms the embodiment of “Lovesick” into a disjointed reclamation of power while exploring themes of religious syncretism. Reaching towards the root of this narrative, our performer’s lips pose as the portal to intimacy and storytelling, with special interest paid to lipstick as a mark making tool of feminine sexuality.
Presented are production stills taken on analog film.
