Artist's Statement
West Oakland Urbanites Two is part of a series observing human influence on the habitats of Bay Area natives. The literal natives, in this piece, are the feral rock doves, common to all cities in the Bay. Perched on a concertina wire lined wall near the Port of Oakland in this piece, the doves are physically being harmed by their aleatory habitat yet stay since they’re non-migratory and it’s the only home they’ll ever know. The series is an allegory about growing up in the Bay Area, and coping with the struggle to stay rooted in the only home I’ve ever known. A struggle against a myriad of human conceived determinants pushing me and those like me further and further away.
