Artist's Statement
The Coast Gasoline (Bridgeway Service) has been an iconic building on the border of Oakland and Berkeley since 1964. It has the name "Bridgeway Service" as it used to be located on MacArthur and was the last gas station before getting on the Bay Bridge to SF. The current location (on 3009 Ashby Ave) was originally a Flying J and is still family owed and operated and offers full service by the owner himself Steve (his parents operated the original location). The Claremont Club & Spa looms in the background. I want to showcase iconic buildings of the bay area neighborhoods that are important to the people who live there, and have special connections with these spaces. We have lots of art of the Bay and Golden Gate Bridges, the cranes in Oakland, the big downtown buildings, but not enough of the places that the people who live in the community relate to. This piece also is a nod to the classic Gas Station art by Ed Ruscha.
