“Homage to Paul” - Dan Hager

My inspiration for this piece came from a workshop I took years ago with the late great ceramic innovator Paul Soldner, who, coincidentally, grew up 20 miles from me in northern Indiana. Paul’s example encouraged me to stay open to fresh, expressive possibilities, taking risks and embracing mistakes and accidents as opportunities in the creative process.
“Homage to Paul” is an example of where curiosity and experimentation with clay can lead me. This sculpture is made of four perfectly thrown pieces that I severely altered through a number of actions and combined with an irregular slab, bisque fired, then fired in an aluminum foil saggar in a raku kiln.
I’m 84 years old and have been making ceramic art for more than 40 years. My work now primarily consists of pedestal, table top and hanging-in-mid-air sculptures.
