Artist's Statement
The piece on display, Blue Willow, is a riff on a popular 18th century chinoiserie porcelain design, in which I inserted humorous and sly elements for the viewer to discover. My work often exploits a mash-up of influences that incorporate references as wide-ranging and diverse as classical art, graphic design, decorative art, fashion, and indigenous craft.
Travels throughout Europe, Asia, and Latin American fuel my curiosity and open my eyes to the breadth of visual culture. The quest to make something beautiful, meaningful, and new remains the perpetual driving force in my creative production. Making art is a challenging consolidation of an individual’s personal expressive voice within the greater culture.
