Artist's Statement
I create oil paintings that recall the vibrancy and optimism of America during the Cold War, reframed to reflect the anxiety and uncertainty of this current era. I draw inspiration largely from vintage snapshots culled from the 1950s through to the 1980s, reframing them in a way that creates compositional and narrative tension. I like creating images that raise more questions than they resolve.
For this painting, a seated figure and her dog sit on one side of an indoor pool regarding a pair of standing figures on the other. The relationship between these people seems unclear. Are they relatives? Servants? The viewer seems to catch the trio in a private moment where unspoken power dynamics rise to the surface.
