Artist's Statement
Stephon Clark, a young black man just holding a phone in his grandmas Sacramento backyard. Shot by police. Hearing more about it on New Years Day. Dreaming about, hoping for a better year ahead, I created “The Space Between”. India ink always makes me feel brave using it because its permanent, it’s a true first response, spatters and all. It’s raw and real. So are these emotions. So is the world we face each day. Thinking of the gap that keeps us from where we want to be. Yet each new year starts with the hope that the gap will close and we get where we know we should be. Wanting real positive change in the new year. Wanting the nightmare to end. Who’s going to close that gap. Well that will be you and me.
