Artist's Statement
A picture speaks a thousand words, which is fortunate for me because I couldn’t speak for this painting if I wanted to. The power of words is clear and apparent to me, and I choose not to give life to negative ones. I intentionally chose not to put “Black Lives Matter” or “I can’t breathe” on this mask. Black lives definitely matter and are significant and special but, I wanted to speak more from a place of power and divinity. “God's People Will Rise” speaks brazen and bold. It's a prophecy. When you see truth, it resonates. Our present time is a tale of two viruses: COVID-19 and Racism. Both affecting and killing black people at high rates. I choose to hold and wield my power. I choose to speak life and victory over situations. This fight is being fought on all fronts, and I know where my assignment is.
