Artist's Statement
In the winter of 2017 extreme rain fell on Big Sur, California. Mountains ravaged by drought could not hold the water. Access was cut off after one of the main bridges on Highway 1 collapsed on the northern end of Big Sur. About 30 miles to the south, the largest landslide in Big Sur history buried the highway. It would be more than a year before Highway 1 would reopen. The four million tourists who visit annually could not get in, Big Sur was empty and quiet. While the locals began the rebuilding process and waited for the road to reopen, I hiked my large format camera into Big Sur. Guided by Torre McQueen, who grew up in Big Sur, I spent the next two years exploring, meeting with residents and photographing. Winona grew up in Big Sur, dancing in the barn where her portrait was made. The photograph is part of my monograph Going South - Big Sur, published by Schilt, Amsterdam, 2019.
