"Hair is political." - Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie

Many black women growing up have been told, in order to be attractive and presentable, they need to tame their hair. Kinky, coily, dark hair is deemed undesirable and less than. The model Karla hailed from Brazil, a country that despite the racial diversity, continues to celebrate the straight-haired, blond, and European look.

When Karla worked in Brazil, she was often asked to wear weaves or wigs for her castings. After moving to Amsterdam and starting a new chapter in her life, she decided that the only way she could feel more like herself is to own her hair and let the natural hair grow. She now simply shows up to casting calls with her big proud afro.
