Artist's Statement
Many of my oil paintings were created as a tribute to the artists I learned of in my youth whose work left an indelible impression on me. “For Thomas” is no exception.
“For Thomas” is for Thomas Hart Benton, a painter from the early/mid twentieth century who put forth on his canvases the soul and sorrow of rural America. In my painting I didn’t want to hold back on the over-the-top histrionics of emotion Thomas was known for—but I also didn’t want that to mock and diminish the sense of true grief my subject was feeling.
