Artist's Statement
The art I saw throughout my childhood in the 1960s and 1970s—as well as the illustrative art that preceded me—have remained my most reliable aesthetic influence.
“Love Paralysis” is my nod to the beautifully rendered oil paintings that adorned the covers of so many “lurid” and “ribald” paperback books of that era that promised 120 newsprint pages of “taboo love” and “forbidden lust”. The content of the covers may have been kitschy and sensationalist but, often, the gorgeous paint work conveyed pathos, poignance and angst-filled emotions between two people overwrought with love for each other. I wanted “Love Paralysis” to highlight the tender and genuine love those great artists were trying to convey in their paintings and not the “forbidden and torrid lust” the publishers undoubtedly demanded from the illustrators.
