Artist's Statement
I started this double portrait years ago after the shooting of Oscar Grant but the work was always left unfinished. The pandemic upended all my working habits. I was unable to bring models into the studio and my attention turned to old projects which I was only able to complete through working from imagination, something which is very unusual for me as a painter. The killing of George Floyd pushed me to bring this painting out of storage and to refocus on the themes of oppression, racially motivated violence and racial profiling. My interest as a painter lies in the intimacy, the unspoken understanding and the confidence between these two men and the strength and resilience that they draw from each other.
