Artist's Statement
“A people without the knowledge of their past history, origin and culture is like a tree without roots.” Marcus Garvey
A major part of the struggle that African descendants face is the complete stripping away of our culture, spirituality, and every thing that defined us as a people. Our very identity was replaced by European standards, and as a result, we are completely out of touch with our roots.
Mama Africa (Birth of a New Nation) represents giving birth to the idea of the liberation of African descendants. It showcases a backdrop of Adinkra symbols from the West African country Ghana. The specific symbols selected represent important aspects of liberation. Among them: FIHANKRA for security and safety; and FAWOHODIE representing emancipation, independence and freedom. The colors used also represent West African symbolism. The maroon color is for Mother Earth, and the gold used for the Adinkra symbols represents royalty and wealth.
