Artist's Statement
It was silent when I took this photo. Because of the quarantine the streets were empty except for a few stragglers, like myself, making their way home after a Black Lives Matter protest. The moment was in stark contrast to the earlier noise of chants and bullhorn speeches but it was by far the most poignant and powerful moment of the day. I watched as this paper memorial to all of the lives lost at the hands of fear and hate past by, too long to fit in my camera’s frame, seemingly never ending.
We have all allowed this list to grow. We have watched passively while each name was etched onto it and chose to ignore it. We should be better than this. We have a responsibility as humans to be better than this.
