Artist's Statement
playground for the rich was inspired by a 2019 article I read about how much money you would have to make to afford housing in San Francisco, with the intention of revisiting the piece every few years with updated numbers to track the housing crisis in the city. I was then inspired to research more about the people living in these districts: their median income, poverty and unemployment rates, how much houses were selling for. All of this housing data seemed perfect to follow the form of a monopoly title deed card, since the game was originally conceived to be an anti-capitalist critique. There is no overt critique made in this piece but a power in the conclusions drawn from comparisons. The numbers speak for themselves and they do not lie: housing in San Francisco is unaffordable, a playground for the rich.
