My painting portrays the epic drama, Rama and Sita, a famous Hindu legend. In this story, Sita had been rescued from captivity by her husband, Rama. Doubtful of Sita’s faithfulness, Rama accuses her of being in love with her former captor, the powerful King Rahvana. In order to prove her devotion to her husband and dispel his doubts, Sita sets herself on fire. This portion of the story displays Rama’s weakness, for while the tale often portrays him as a strong and valiant hero, he still succumbs to human emotions such as jealousy and distrust.
In this depiction of Rama and Sita, I was inspired by the many modes through which this legend is conveyed in Balinese culture: shadow puppetry, dance and theater, as well as in paintings. I therefore chose to incorporate images of shadow puppets within the scene.
