Artist's Statement
In looking for new material to paint, I have been drawing on what is most central to me – my experiences. I found interest in objects I use most often. Like many, the majority of my life is spent using only a handful of items and although I have spent countless hours with these items, I have yet to spend one minute actually appreciating them. With this in mind, I began searching for things we, as a general public, often use, but never fully study – such as a bike. A Broken Bike is inspired by my search to find beauty in everyday objects which usually escape our notice. A bike is a fundamental item for so many on the west coast, and around the world. In this painting, I try to highlight the beauty of a bike.
