Artist's Statement
This image is part of the series “Once Upon A Time…”, in which I take a cue from children’s story time to hide the cautionary tale within the fairy tale, in a “Hansel and Gretel”-style switcheroo: candied cuteness up front, wretched news afterward. The whole is a playful-yet-earnest commentary on the multiform ways our societies lack humanity. This one is a photograph of the Mission District’s Kid Power Park, which generously offered up a gift: the magazine, discarded or forgotten, was on the ground when I arrived (I never introduce props), and when I randomly opened it up, it landed on the spread shown, displaying, on the left, a body without a head, and on the right, a head without a mouth, mirroring the mosaic mural’s primary figures. Sometimes the world does conspire in our favor.
