Artist's Statement
This still life is part of a series of pastel drawings of vintage machinery, which are all objects that I own. I’m compelled to portray them by the play of light on the forms and subdued colors, and the way you can see the mechanical workings, like bones, of the once-utilitarian objects turned centerpieces.
When I feel a drawing of these objects is successful, the result might be a surreal image with a phantom-like quality, like a ghost of obsolescence floating in darkness. I might be left with a comforting feeling of having given something inanimate a second chance at life.
